A Season For Learning

As we move further into April, the garden begins to feel more certain of itself. Growth is steady, and the sun’s warmth is encouraging many of our herbs to come into their own.

There is already much happening across Jekka's Herb Garden. Herbaceous herbs such as Wild Garlic and Sweet Cicely are coming into flower and providing early flavour, while self-seeding annuals like Borage are beginning to bloom, offering valuable pollen for bees. Deciduous herbs, including Lemon Verbena, are slowly forming fresh leaves once again. For more information and tips for growing herbs this spring, please see Jekka's blog (linked below).

One of the most anticipated returns is French Tarragon. Its distinctive flavour is unmatched, particularly in marinades and sauces. It is worth noting that true French Tarragon cannot be grown from seed and is only propagated by cuttings, something often misunderstood. Read more in Jekka's blog "All about French Tarragon".

As we embark on our new chapter, we have a renewed emphasis on education and the sharing of knowledge. Recently, we welcomed the first masterclass of the season, focusing on the fundamentals of growing herbs which included seed sowing, propagation, cuttings, watering, and the role of soil. Soil is often overlooked engine of the earth, quietly sustaining all growth. As one masterclass participant noted, “being shown, and then doing it yourself, cannot be replaced by a book or a video.

From History to Practice: Learning Through Herbs

Continuing the theme for education, Dr Kim Walker, who will be speaking at our May Herb Days, has also recently written a blog for us about Nicholas Culpeper, the 17th-century herbalist who sought to make plant knowledge accessible to all.

In her piece, she reflects on Rosemary, an early-flowering herb long associated with memory and clarity. Culpeper described it as supporting the head and senses, a perspective that continues to shape how the plant is understood today. As Rosemary continues to flower in the garden, it offers a timely reminder that herbal knowledge is rooted not only in texts, but in observation and use. Traditional preparations, such as rosemary-infused honey, demonstrate how plants have been worked with in simple, practical ways for generations. Read Kim's blog and make the rosemary-infused honey for yourself through the link below.

Sharing Knowledge More Widely

Sharing knowledge about herbs takes many forms. Earlier this season, Jekka appeared on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, bringing herbs into everyday gardening. She will also feature on What’s In Your Plant Pot? on CBeebies, introducing younger audiences to Mint and the beginnings of plant knowledge.

Beyond the farm, Jekka will be speaking at RHS Malvern Spring Festival, with talks on growing and using herbs through the seasons. Later, she will attend the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in support of the RHS Feature Garden, for which we are proudly growing herbs.

Here at Jekka’s Herb Farm, our programme of learning continues to develop. Alongside our masterclasses, we are pleased to be hosting HORTISTRY, which is a new course designed to pass on the skills of the nurseryman to professional gardeners.

Following this, our May Herb Days (1st & 2nd May) offer time to explore Jekka's Herb Garden and learn directly from our guest speakers. We are pleased to welcome Dr Kim Walker among them.

Throughout the season we are also welcoming group visits from across the world, including visitors travelling from America and South Korea, for bespoke private tours.

These herb experiences, mark an important part of our wider programme of learning for the year ahead. However you choose to engage, this is a season to observe, to learn, and to enjoy the quiet rewards of working with Herbs. Do take a look at our events calendar for more information or plan a group visit through the link below.
