Preparations for winter!

This week we started preparing Jekka's Herb Garden for the forthcoming winter season.

The Oreganos and the late-flowering Thymes underwent a pruning to remove all the old flowering stems and fallen leaves, providing space for new growth to develop. The removal of the old flowers prompts the plant to redirect its energy towards producing fresh foliage, ensuring that it establishes a beautiful cushion of leaves before the winter weather begins. This protective layer of new leaves serves as a safeguard for the plant's crown against the brutal elements of winter.

Pruning Jekka's Thyme Beds

Mac has started the rigorous job of pressure washing the glasshouse, polytunnels, and hard-standings. We clean our nursery every September, in anticipation of our principal propagation period in the autumn, in order to prepare for the spring season.

Cleaning ensures our cuttings and young plants grow in a pristine environment throughout the winter, which minimises the risk of pests and disease. Having cultivated our herbs organically for four decades, we are convinced that maintaining a clean nursery and workspace significantly enhances the health of our plants.
