Summer in Jekka's Herb Garden

We haven’t experienced a summer like this in a long time, with record temperatures recorded in our polytunnels.

We used to have a saying for Lavandula angustifolias “Prune one-eighth, on the eighth day, of the eighth month.” But this year, we’ve already begun pruning these Lavenders in Jekka’s Herbetum, a whole month earlier than usual, as they finished flowering far ahead of schedule.

With our ever-changing climate, it’s more important than ever to observe your plants rather than rely strictly on the gardening calendar. Let your plants be your guide.

For all herbs in the Lamiaceae family, we highly recommend giving them a proper prune straight after flowering. This signals the plant to redirect its energy into producing fresh new growth.

Another summer tip: with temperatures now peaking around 4pm, it’s best to water your garden first thing in the morning, rather than after work, so your plants can absorb moisture before the heat sets in.

Helichrysum italicum, Punica granatum and Santolina rosmarinifolia subsp rosmarinifolia ‘Primrose Gem’

Some of the standout herbs in our garden this season have been the Curry Plant (Helichrysum italicum), Pomegranate (Punica granatum), and Cotton Lavender ‘Primrose Gem’ (Santolina rosmarinifolia subsp. rosmarinifolia ‘Primrose Gem’). These three drew a lot of attention at our July Open Days, alongside the array of thymes in Jekka’s Gravel Garden, which have been in their element, creating a carpet of colour and scent.

August Open Days

We’re excited to welcome you to our August Open Days, which we’ve divided into two sessions each day:

Morning Session (9am–12pm):

  • Garden Tour at 9:30am
  • Herb Talk with Jekka at 10:30am

Afternoon Session (1pm–4pm):

  • Garden Tour at 1:30pm
  • Herb Talk with Jekka at 2:30pm

These days are a wonderful opportunity to visit the Herb Farm, explore Jekka’s Herbetum and Herb Garden, and meet our knowledgeable team, who will be on hand to help with plant purchases and offer guidance for your own herb-growing journey.

We’ll also be joined by the Woodland Trust, who will have an information stand. And of course, our café will be serving homemade cakes and herbal teas!

Supporting the National Garden Scheme - Saturday 2nd August

We’ve proudly supported the National Garden Scheme (NGS) for the past 10 years. This year, we’re dedicating Saturday 2nd August to raising funds for this incredible cause, with all ticket proceeds going directly to the NGS and the charities they support.

The NGS opens the gates to over 3,500 gardens across the UK, raising funds for vital nursing and health charities through admissions, teas, and cake. Since its beginnings in the early 1900s, the NGS has raised over £74 million, including over £3.5 million in 2024 alone. Their core beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

They are also passionate advocates for the physical and mental health benefits of gardening, offering grant bursaries to support community gardening projects.

Help us support the incredible work of the NGS by joining us on Saturday 2nd August.
