From Seed to Garden: Growing the Next Generation of Herbs

We all need something to look forward to, and there is something wonderfully optimistic about growing herbs from seed.

At Jekka’s, even as the garden begins to slow down and we start preparing for winter, our glasshouse is already looking towards next year, with seeds germinating and young plants beginning their journey towards spring.

We never quite know what winter will bring. There may be snow or temperatures well below freezing, but one thing we do know is that spring will follow.

Every seed you sow is a little investment in tomorrow.

The next generation growing in the glasshouse

From Jekka's Herb Garden to yours

Seeds are not a sideline at Jekka’s, they are at the heart of what we do.

Our collection includes hundreds of culinary and medicinal herbs, and our seed range now includes more than 140 varieties to discover.

We harvest and clean many of our own seeds at Jekka's, trial them in our glasshouse and hand pack them into our illustrated seed packets, complete with our own sowing instructions.

An important part of what we do is preserving the variety and diversity of the herbs we grow. Some have been cultivated for hundreds, even thousands, of years. By continuing to grow, harvest and share their seeds, we can help keep these varieties in cultivation for generations to come.

Our collection includes familiar culinary herbs alongside unusual varieties, herbs traditionally grown for medicinal use, and plants valued for their flowers, fragrance and biodiversity.

For us, growing from seed isn’t simply another way to grow herbs, it is part of keeping this extraordinary collection alive.

Give Your Herbs an Autumn Boost

You don’t need to be an experienced gardener to grow herbs from seed.
With a little warmth, light and patience, one small packet can produce multiple plants for your garden, raised bed or even a pot outside the kitchen door.

And there is something particularly satisfying about picking fresh herbs from a plant you have grown yourself.

Jekka’s Seed Club is a great way to discover and grow herbs you may not have tried before. Each collection is chosen to suit the growing season, with herbs for the kitchen, traditional herbal use, flowers and biodiversity.

Or, Jekka's Grow at Home subscription gives you everything you need to get started, with five packets of seeds, biodegradable pots, labels and the same seed compost we use in our own glasshouse.

There is something rather special about receiving seeds in the post, opening the parcel to discover what you are going to grow and imagining the plants that will emerge from those tiny seeds.

It is a little promise of a garden to come.
